spiritual mothering: chapter 2

Here are my answers to the discussion from the book Spiritual Mothering by Susan Hunt. You can see the discussion of others at The Simple Wife.

1. In the first short section of chapter 2, Hunt talks about the second-pivotal principle of spiritual mothering: that our life-purpose is to glorify God. The driving force of any spiritual mothering relationship is not the relationship, but God's glory. How does this alter/change/influence/affect what you've thought so far about this topic? Does it change how you perceive this kind of mentoring? If so, how? I guess when I first thought about mentoring I didn't think about it being for God's glory. I immediately thought that two people would learn new things, experience highs and lows together, pray and grow in their faith. My thoughts were not that the sole purpose of the relationship was to bring glory to God...but it only makes sense. Isn't every relationship that we are part of solely because of our creator God? Isn't the reason that we live and breathe is to bring God glory. It just makes sense that the mentoring relationship's "premier purspose" is to bring God glory. This changes how I perceive this kind of mentoring a little bit. Because it just goes to show that it's all about God. That He will ordain the relationship and make it happen, blossom and end at His time. How awesome that once again I am left saying, "it's a good thing that God is God and I am not!"

2. Much of the chapter examines Mary. "I fear that too often we do not hold Mary up as an example, because we are overcompensating for some who have elevated her above humanity. This robs us of one of the most beautiful examples of faith found in Scripture...In Mary we do see a woman who embraced God's glory as her reason for being and translated that into her experience" (page 26).
What struck you fresh about Mary's story after reading this chapter?
I am SO glad that Hunt started out with that quote above. It's SO true (expecially in the Lutheran church) that we are almost afraid to talk about Mary because we don't want to be seen "elevating" Mary to a status similar to that of Jesus. I loved all the points that Hunt made about Mary's faith and obedience to Christ. So often we just think of her as a teenage mother to Jesus but she was so much more than just a mother. She was a great example of obedience and unswerving faith in Christ. Yes, I'm sure she had questions and maybe even doubts but she let her faith in Christ trump all questions. She was ready to reflect God's glory right back to Him.

3. Hunt made a couple of statements about Mary's response to the angel:
"This young woman handled the situation without her brain or her emotions being scrambled" (page 27).
"This was no emotional reaction but rather a deliberate and logical response based upon the character and promises of God" (page 28).
How do these statements compare to how you typically respond to something? Are you more on the side of being scrambled, or more deliberate and logical?
I feel that too often I make split second reactions and do not think before I speak. I know that I more often than not live a scrambled life moving from one thing to the next with barely a thought about it. I wish that my life reflected a more deliberate and thought out logical response to things that life throws at me. Sometimes I do react in this way on the outside but my mind is a scrambled mess thinking of what has to happen next.
How does/should having a life-purpose of glorifying God and an identity of being the Lord's servant affect our response any kind of situation? My first thought should be "does this glorify God?" If I cannot honestly answer yes to that question then I need to stop, back out, change direction, whatever it may be so that my response to situations can bring glory solely to God and not to myself or others around me.

4. On page 32, Hunt distinguishes between confidence based on our identity in Christ and self-confidence. How do you see these as being different? I think these are very different for I feel that I have confidence in Christ but lack self-confidence. You'd think that if you are confident in Christ that self-confidence would follow but I am still working on that. I desire to have such confidence in Christ that I am able to get rid of the self-centered characteristics that I posses. Sometimes when I am lacking the self-confidence I feel that I am not truly portraying my life of faith. If I don't have confidence in the person that Christ made me to be how can I display my faith in Him and His creation to others. This is an area of my life that I feel I need a lot of work on. Confidence in Christ will give me self-confidence that is not arrogant or offensive.
5. If you had to pick a sentence or a phrase from this chapter to write on your bathroom mirror to see each and every day, what would you pick? Why? "God's grace enables us to know our mission in life and empowers us to fulfill our mission." Awesome. Thanks be to God for His unending grace. Now I will know my mission and by His grace I can fulfill my mission. I also love, "servitude simplifies life". I'm in a stage of my life where I really crave the simple things. I crave a simplified life and this little quote could not have put it into perspective any better.
6. Anything else you want to add, highlight, or ask everyone else to answer? Have at it! "Once God's glory is our purpose, then we have a center point to which we can relate each decision and each situation." I love this quote but also want to know....what does that look like in real life?

garage organization

Let's start this story at the beginning...
A Pastor and his family stayed with us in July.
They then sent us a gift card to Amazon.com
We are grateful!
We couldn't figure out what we could use.
So, we decided to get some magazine subscriptions.
Greg got: ESPN, A golf magazine and a handyman magazine.
I got: Real Simple and Family Fun.
We LOVE our magazines
(but Greg does regret getting ESPN and
would rather have Sports Illustrated)
but you live and learn right?

Anyway.
The first handyman magazine arrived and on the cover was an organized garage.
The stories inside talked about how to make a work bench and other storage shelves.
Greg got excited.
Greg got inspired.
Greg got to work.
He planned and plotted.
He measured and designed.
He cut and he nailed.
He is pretty close to a perfectionist when it comes to these types of things,
so I had no doubt that whatever he decided to do would be great!
He started with the work bench.
He completed it in about three days from start to finish.
Mind you that's only working a couple of hours each day.
It turned out great.
He assures me that not everything is in place yet.
But will be soon.

Next on the list.
Storage shelves for our boxes of Christmas decorations and other things I suppose.
He's also going to let me design some shelving for inside my laundry room!
I cannot wait!
I'd love to be able to actually see what I have to work with
and get at all the things for the projects that Naomi and I do organized.
I love being organized...just don't always have a place to put everything.

Soon, I will.
Now remember these are photos of our GARAGE...
don't let the mess scare you!
The corner before:

The whole back wall after.

During:

busy...

...playing catch up.

...doing the October budget.

...sewing a quilt for a certain little girl who turns 3 this week.

...thinking of all the things on my TO-DO list.

...praying for my SIL's father who has cancer.

...trying to figure out how to be more calm and patient with a little blonde girl.

So, no real post today...maybe check back later...or you might just have to wait till tomorrow.

brown bag lunch

I finally finished the felt food brown bag lunch that I started working on in May!
Can you believe that I let this adorable project take me that long?
I saw the tutorial at Skip to my Lou sometime at the end of March and when I was in Wisconsin at the end of May I made the bag of chips and all the little chips.
Two weeks ago I made the bread and all the fixings and then the little swiss cake roll.
This weekend while at the Pastor's Wives Retreat I got the bread stuffed, sewn up and finished sewing the little cake roll.
Naomi has already taken my order and tried all the food. She loves playing with it all!
You can see some more photos of my felt food here.

some things i love...

the open road, loud music, an empty car...
catching up with old friends...making new friends...skits, singing and laughter...the open countryside...crosses on top of churches...texas pride all over the place...
Stories to come later.
More photos from the Pastor's Wives retreat can be seen here.
Photos from the Mt. Calvary Women's Retreat can be seen here.
What are some things you love?

do you think...

...if I made these for my kiddos they would look this happy to be wearing them......that if I made Greg wear this sweater that I made that he would actually let me photograph him in it?...that this fun pose can make the sweater look better?

just wondering...

blue

When I saw that the challenge for this weeks photo at i (heart) faces was "blue" I knew instantly what photo I was going to use. I LOVE this photo of Micah. I captured it rather randomly in my brothers backyard in San Diego on January 1, 2009. I love his blue eyes and how they really pop because of his blue hoodie not to mention the sweet little look on his face! This is SO Micah. I love this photo so much that I had it made into a 20x30 canvas and hung it in his room!!!

weekend away

Well, I didn't have a photo to post today...
So I decided to check out the archives.
Here are some photos of Naomi on this day is 2007.

Oh and turn away now if you're squeemish or if poop grosses you out...

This photo was also in that folder.
Gotta love it.
That's talent I tell ya!
Just gotta face the facts of real life I guess.

These last few days here in south Texas have been amazing.
It feels like fall!!!!! God is so good to me!!!
The temps have been hovering between the high 60's and low 70's,
it's been raining (which we all know that we need),
the doors and windows have been open!
We busted out the footie jammies for both kiddos last night.
And it just FEELS like fall!!! Thank you God for the great feelings~
Now, if only it would stay like this...

I am off for the weekend to the Texas District Pastor's Wives Retreat.
I'll be heading to Camp Lonestar again for the whole weekend.
I'll be leaving today around 2:30ish and be back sometime on Sunday.
I am very excited for a little "me" time and time with other women
who are in my shoes and have walked this path before.
I'm looking forward to seeing some of my PW friends and getting to know
more PW's. I'm looking forward to being without kiddos for the weekend.
You all know I adore my kids and would do anything for them, but everyone
needs a break every once in a while. I'll miss my sweet hubby lots too.
You know what they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Well, that's all I have for today.

If I have time today I'll post something for tomorrow with photos of all the paintings that I will be trying to sell at the retreat. If they don't sell it's no big deal, that just means I've got a head start on Christmas presents~

Have a blessed weekend and don't forget to worship our Savior on Sunday!!!

micah cries

That little boy cracks me up.
He loves to just sit down and empty things...
be it the toy box
or the toy shelf.
Everything gets pulled out,
played with for a second,
and tossed aside for something else.
At least he cleans up after his messes!
(I wish)
He LOVES to push things around.
The vaccum, chairs, the easel, anything that will move.
It's so funny to see what they are draw to, to play with. Our nightly ritual (when daddy's not home)
has turned into books and snuggle time in Naomi's bed.
Micah loves to climb up there and lay
RIGHT NEXT TO or on top of Naomi.
And he has to be covered up just like sissy is.
It's so fun to read them books,
snuggle, say prayers, sing their songs,
and get them ready for a good nights rest.

It is however, not fun listening to Micah cry before he goes to sleep.
He does it every night and every nap time.
We do the same routine everytime.
He cries everytime.
He goes to bed at the same time everynight. (just about)
He cries everynight.
I just don't get it.
Sometimes he cries for a couple of seconds and
other nights (like tonight) he cries for a good hour.
What can I do to get him to just GO TO SLEEP!?
Or at least get to the place of talking to himself before
he falls asleep...but the crying is getting old!

moments

We do not remember days,
we remember moments.

birthday celebration

Yesterday the kids and I went to church to help Josh celebrate his 30th birthday.
Any excuse to
1) bake a cake
2) eat brisket, baked beans and potato salad
3) celebrate a birthday
4) get out of the house
5) fellowship with Greg's coworkers
is a good excuse for me.

Josh is big into gaming systems but I had no idea how I could translate that into a cake without the proper tools and not much time. So I decided to make his cake resemble a record since I know he loves music. I love to bake but the decorating can be hit or miss sometimes.Nancy and Susan getting the drinks ready...a meeting of the minds...I should have gotten a photo of Pastor H's shirt it had a photo of Bob Ross and it said "happy trees"...ahh, I loved watching Bob Ross. The shirt looks like this.Janice and Josh getting some food ready...Micah enoying the freedom of the gym...He loved the food...it's written all over his face.Josh looks a little too excited to be holding that big knife! We always enjoy the staff birthday lunches. The food is awesome and the company is great too!
Yes, Naomi was there, she was so excited to be able to hang out with Josh and eat next to Josh and play with Josh...it was all about Josh...but I didn't get a good photo of her. sorry naomi!
