grand slam dress pattern

Monday, August 26, 2013
Well, I crossed another thing off my "to try" list. I sewed with knits. I know, it's not earth shattering. Many of you out there have been sewing with knits for years. But some of you may be like me...TOTALLY INTIMIDATED. Just like most things I'm intimidated by it was WAY easier than I thought it would be, it turned out  pretty good, it fit Hannah and I really had nothing to be intimidated by! Now, when you sew with knits you really should use a serger (if anyone wants to get my one for Christmas I won't turn you down ;)), or a double needle or at least a ball point needle...but I did none of the above. Frankly I just didn't have any of those things on hand and I was under a time constraint....

You see one of my favorite pattern designers, Amy from Peek-a-Boo Patterns, had a call on facebook for pattern testers. I thought I'd enter my name and the sizes I could test just on a slim chance that she'd pick me. And she did. But this was to be a quick turnaround...chosen on a Tuesday and photos and review had to be turned in by Thursday. I figured I'd have plenty of time to figure this out on Wednesday...plus the pattern said it could be sewn in an hour. Well, it did take me a little longer than an hour but in the future I think I could EASILY make another one of these dresses (or shirts) in an hour. The pattern is called the "grand slam" and it's a super cute baseball type shirt but makes a great dress. It was so easy to cut out and put together. I just used a zig-zag stitch since I didn't have a serger and I wanted the seams to be able to stretch a bit. It was so easy to do and I suggest that you give knits a try! You never know if you'll like it or not if you don't give it a shot!

Hannah LOVED wearing this dress and kept it on all day after I took her photos even though it was a hot and humid day. She's pretty cute isn't she? I couldn't decide which photo to share...so I'm sharing a BUNCH!

Yup, it turned out a bit short...probably because I didn't do something right...but we just solved that problem by putting on a pair of leggings and calling it good!

 That's my sweet spunky Hannah!!
I've got the same fabric on my cutting table to make dresses for the other girls and the pattern is ready also to make a "grand slam" tshirt for Micah!! So excited to begin the new journey of sewing with knits. But I guess I really should look into getting a ball point needle and/or a serger someday!!
