alondra's funeral

This afternoon was the funeral for baby Alondra.
She was 18 months old.
You can read her story here.

I'm not gonna lie, it was hard to attend this funeral.
To see that small wooden box and know a small fragile child was inside.
To hear the weeping and moaning of her parents.
To see friends gathered round lost in their emotions and hugs of others.

It is not natural. Death that is.
No parent should have to bury their child.

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart
to those who willingly gave donations
to Alonzo and April to help with their funeral and other costs.
We were able to write them a check for $845, so THANKS!!!

I would LOVE it if you would sit back, get comfy
and read the words my husband spoke so eloquently
to this family at the funeral service.

I am so glad that I am not in his shoes,
that I don't have to prepare a sermon
for a family who just lost their baby.
I do not envy him AT ALL.

But let me tell you, he did an extraordinary job with this sermon.
The words he chose and how he crafted this sermon was definitely a God thing.
He spoke words that were given to Him by our Savior, Redeemer, God.

Please take the 5-10 minutes that it may take to read this sermon.
You will be changed, or at least challenged.
If you have any questions when you're done reading
feel free to leave them in the comments
and I'll have my hubby answer them later!

Go hug your kiddos and tell them how much you love them.

Life is fragile, but death is not final if you know Jesus as your Savior.

"Waiting For Jesus to Finish His Work” Mark 5:41-42

April, Alonzo, Carolina Maribel, extended family, dear friends, please pray with me:

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, our rock and our redeemer” (Psalm 19:14). Amen.

The last few days have been a whirlwind of emotion: confusion, denial, pain, anger, fear, and yes, even joy. Little Alondra had been so full of life, singing in the car, playing with her sister, riding on her horsey. And then, just hours later, little Alondra’s heart would no longer beat. Nothing could have prepared you for the events of that night. Parents are not supposed to outlive their children. And yet, as you finally made it home in the wee hours of the morning, there was no denying it: death had raised its ugly head. And boy does it sting.

It would be insensitive for any of us to say that we know what you are going through right now, but we know that when man’s words are inadequate, God’s Word is what we need. And He has given us the story of a man who has something in common with you. It’s the story of Jairus, and he too had lost his daughter at a young age. We read his story in Mark, chapter 5:

While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house some who said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?" But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not fear, only believe." And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. And when he had entered, he said to them, "Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her, "Talitha cumi," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise." And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. (Mark 5:35-43)

Jairus was helpless. His daughter was dying, so he ran to Jesus. Desperate for Jesus to do something, anything, Jairus went to the only man that he believed could do anything to help his dying daughter. But he was too late. “Your daughter is dead,” someone from his house yelled out. “Why trouble the Teacher any further?” I’ll tell you why. Because this teacher, Jesus Christ, has the power to bring life where death seems to have one the day. In fact, he had already begun to do this for Alondra.

The Scriptures tell us that mankind is conceived in sin, and brought forth in iniquity. As beautiful as a new-born-baby is, a new-born-baby is born dead in his or her trespasses. In other words, when Alondra was born 18 months ago, she was born in a helpless condition and was already in need of this teacher that has the power to bring life where there is death. And so, you did for the first time what Jairus did in the text. You brought her to Jesus. You brought little Alondra here to the baptismal font as in infant, where she received the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit. It was right here, at this baptismal font, that Jesus began His good work in little Alondra, giving Her the very righteousness He had earned by having His sinless life ended on the cross. When Alondra was baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ gave Alondra life where previously there had been darkness and death. Little Alondra was welcomed by her savior as a little child and so she inherited the Kingdom of God.

And yet, here we are. Today, like in Jairus’s day, there will come a voice that will make you wonder if indeed there is really any hope. “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any more?” Only this time the voice won’t come from the crowd, it will come from Satan, for he wants the wages of sin which we see right now with our very eyes to destroy the hope within our hearts. Satan knows that the sting of death is real, for when a child of God lies lifeless in our arms, it is really us that remain who are helpless.

You see, Alondra is secure, she had fallen asleep in Christ, and is now with Her Savior. She has departed from this valley of sorrows, and now simply lives in His perfect presence awaiting that day when He comes again to bring her body up out of the ground with all her brothers and sisters in Christ to enjoy their heavenly mansion where they will never again be plagued by death. St. Paul writes in Romans, chapter 14, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. The Lord had called her by name. Alondra was no longer helpless, for she was the Lord’s in her life, and today, in Her death, she is still the Lord’s.

You see, today’s sermon, and the prayers of your family and friends are not for little Alondra. They are for us who are left behind. Today, we are the helpless ones. It is us who today are like Jarius. It is us who today are in desperate need of what our great teacher, Jesus Christ, can give. Today, we cling to Jesus’ promises, and yet, we need Jesus to help the unbelief that still remains and which threatens to tear us apart. And so, He does.

You see, Jairus didn’t listen to that voice in the crowd, because Jesus wouldn’t let him, and today, you don’t have to listen to Satan’s voice either. Do not fear, my friends, believe. Believe that what Jesus did for that 12-year-old daughter of Jairus, Jesus will do for little Alondra and all who put their trust in Him. There is a day when every man or woman who has walked this earth will hear the blast of a trumpet, and will look to the heavens and see Jesus coming forth. On that day, little Alondra will have her body enlivened once again by the powerful spirit of God who long ago was breathed upon the valley of the dry bones and formed them into living and breathing bodies. Just as sure as we believe that what happened to Jairus really happened, so too can we trust that what God has promised for little Alondra will take place and she, like Job and all the rest of the flock of faith, will see their savior face to face, in the flesh, with new and glorified bodies.

The casket we see here today in our midst is not Alondra’s final resting place, and Jesus refuses to allow Satan to make you think that it is. In Jesus Christ, we have the hope of a resurrection. Jesus Christ walked out of His tomb on Easter Sunday, so that those who follow Him would not have their faith defeated by the sting of death. For all of God’s promises are yes in Christ Jesus, which is why St. Paul is able to say in 1 Corinthians, chapter 15: "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? Thanks be to God, who gave Alondra the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Alonzo, April, family and friends, today is only the beginning. You have suffered a wound that will never completely heal. But don’t allow Satan to use it to destroy you. During those difficult days and nights, when you are helpless and are struggling to go on, do what Jairus did. Run to Jesus, for he is the teacher that helps the helpless, that comforts the grieving, and that turns death into life. Stay close to Jesus. Be where His powerful and life-givng Word is preached. Run to His table where he strengthens you with His body and blood. Run to Jesus, and it won’t just be Alondra who receives the victory. We’ll be joining her. For as St. Paul said, neither death nor life can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

trendy crafter

Hey all, I'm entering the Trendy Crafter contest
over at Trendy Treehouse
(where you can find me on Saturdays)
I don't expect to make it past the first round,
especially with something as easy and "common" as a bunting,
BUT, I thought I'd enter anyway!

I've been wanting to make this for my daughter's room for ages.
Finally got around to it and thought I would enter it just for kicks.

So, I did not take step by step photos but it's pretty simple to explain.
I cut out triangles with wrong sides together of two fabrics,
(just so they would match)
then I sewed the triangles together, just on two sides (not the top)
not worrying about turning and such.
Then I used my pinking shears and cut the edges

Then I just lined them all up and using a double folded bias tape
just put the top in between the two layers of the bias tape and sewed them in.

When I hung them in her room Naomi was SUPER excited about it.
I didn't think I'd get that reaction but it made me feel good.
She's good for my ego!!
She was so excited to show her daddy when he got back from his trip!

Do you have a cool craft made with TAPE of any kind?
Then you need to get over there and enter your craft as well.
Now go, have pitty on me and vote!

a plea for your help

When you receive a call at 4:30am it's usually not good.
When the phone rang on Saturday morning I had no concept of time.
My sweet husband answered the phone in a groggy state of mind
but listened intently as he was told some devastating news
by a parishioner,
a friend.

Alonzo told Greg that in the wee hours of the morning
his sweet little 18 month old daughter had passed away.
Greg listened and didn't ask a ton of questions (he was still sleepy)
but promised to pray for the family
and talk with them again later that day.

When he got off the phone I asked him what happened
(knowing it wasn't good)
and he told me,
I couldn't speak.
There were no words.
Really, there still aren't words.
Sitting here typing this makes me cry.
They do not know the cause of death yet,
the autopsy report could take up to 8 weeks to come back.

The fact that I am coming to you,
to plead for your help
on behalf of this family,
for this reason,
is unthinkable to me.
To lose such a young one, is just unfathomable.
I know God has a plan, I just don't know what it is.

This sweet family is rich with love, care and Jesus.
They are not rich with money.
They are struggling to put together enough finances for
a funeral for their 18 month old daughter.

Did you read that last sentence?
A funeral for their 18 month old daughter.
I hate even typing those words and don't even dare speak them.
I cannot even begin to imagine
their pain,
their questions,
their loss.

But as I spoke with Alonzo this morning I was reassured of their hope.
You see, baby Alondra was baptized.
She was washed clean by the blood of the lamb.
She was made a member of God's family through water and the Word.
Alonzo and April are clinging to the hope of the resurrection today.
It may be the only thing that gets them through these coming
days,
weeks,
months,
years.

The knowledge that they will be reunited with their sweet baby girl in heaven.
Their hope and comfort can only come from Jesus himself.
Who shed his blood on Calvary so that we may live forever with Him.

So, I am asking if you would be willing to help this family.
What can you do?
First and foremost... PRAY!
Pray for Alonzo, April and their daughter Carolina.
Pray that they would have peace that only Christ can give.
Pray that they would know the love of their Savior.
Pray that their needs would be met.
Pray that God's will would be done.

If you feel so inclined I know the family would love
to have a proper funeral and burial for their little girl.
But they simply cannot afford to do so at this time, on their own.
I have placed a paypal donate button
on my sidebar and at the end of this post,
if you feel so inclined to help them out.

If everyone who read this donated at least $5 they would be
MUCH more likely to be able to give their little girl a proper funeral.
Every last cent will go directly to the family
to help them out with funeral related expenses.

You could also spread the word.
Tell people of their story, point people to my blog.
Show people where they can help out and donate.

I will also be donating all proceeds from
my etsy store sales until Friday, July 30th.
So, if you've been wanting a painting,
or scripture photo, or card, now is the time to buy.
Because when you buy,
a family suffering a great loss
gets the help they need.

Thank you for listening to my plea for help.
Please do what you're able to help out as well.

more fun with cardboard

Naomi plays with her Barbies everyday.
Micah usually plays with her...
it's so cute to watch them play Barbies together,
until Micah starts hitting Barbies over the head with other Barbies
(he's just trying to make it manly, right?)

Naomi has been talking about a house for her Barbies for some time.
But I'm not about to go out and buy a Barbie house
(no funds and no room for something so big).
So, I decided to make her a little Barbie house out of some old cereal boxes.
She LOVES it.

All the Barbies come over and sit in the house,
and I mean ALL of them.
She loves to have them ring the doorbell,
and look out the window to see who's coming.
For a free Barbie house it sure is loved!

They even have hard wood floors
(I'm so jealous!)

My SIL, Catherine, told me about this awesome website the other day.
I spent a long time looking around...and you will to.
I can't believe I didn't find this site sooner!

Catherine was telling me about the paper city
(which I can't wait to do, ahem, for my kids).
I also fell in love with the cardboard aquarium and fish.
After getting that box of goodies from MomSelect,
I knew I had the perfect box for our new aquarium!
Check it out...

portable, the fish move and it's fun to look at!

a sneak peak

I'm posting this so that I actually get around to talking about it!!
I was so thrilled when I heard the doorbell last week
and there was a big square box on my porch...
I couldn't remember ordering anything that would fit in a box
of that size (I'm still waiting on some canvases though).

When I opened it and saw all these goodies inside
I was floored and super excited!!
All these samples and gift certificates came from
MomSelect and Mom Magazine and
their sponsors!

I will be doing individual reviews in the coming weeks
(a little at a time so there's no overkill).
But the cool thing...
they said I'll be getting another box for
back-to-school
and then one around
Thanksgiving time!

I'm so excited to test these products
and companies out and let you know
about some great places for shopping...

hey, Christmas is only a little over 100 days away
so we better start thinking about it right?

Anyway, have a great day!

so...random

So...
I failed my first glucose test
and have to do the three hour test in two weeks.
But since my number was close to the cut off
my doctor isn't too worried and thinks I'll pass the next one.
On the bright side, in two weeks I'll get a three hour vacation!
ha! I'll have to sit at the doctors office and read a book
and get my finger pricked every few hours!
I'm not worried about it.
So...
I've got one more day till my hubby comes back
from his two week vacation!
ha! It wasn't a vacation at all...he's been working hard.
But I'm excited to have him home.
I have a deep respect for single mothers and military wives.
I don't know how you do it.
I had my mother-in-law here for week one and
I'm pretty sure I would be in the looney bin without her help.
So...
All you moms out there who are alone with the kiddos
for more than a week at a time,
my hat is off to you!
You are amazing!
You are incredible!
I wonder how you do it!
So...
this post is really random.
I've got lots of post about...
without a desire to do so.
That is why you get the most random post of the year.
So...
I'm looking for some quest bloggers to help me out
when it comes to baby time in October.
Would you be willing to write a guest post for me?
a tutorial?
your favorite craft?
your favorite book?
anything really...within reason!
Let me know if you'd be willing to help me out
and we'll get something scheduled!

state stitched cards

After moving to Texas I realized the people here have a real
PRIDE for their state.
It's not a cocky, arrogant, annoying pride for Texas,
okay, it is...sometimes.
But the people that live here truly LOVE their state.
I'm slowly beginning to feel that way too.
I'm excited that I will soon have two
TRUE TEXANS in our house.
So, even if we someday move,
we'll still be able to claim the state as part of our family history!

Anyway, I was thinking of what to do for some more stitched cards
and since the state pride thing was on my mind,
I decided to make some state stitched cards.
These cards are perfect for lots of occasions...
the birth of a baby,

a wedding or anniversary,
(Greg, act surprised in October okay?)

or just to say "I miss you"

You could do two states or the whole map full of places you love!

Check out the cards in my etsy store
and let me customize one just for you!

yum...breakfast

This is what I'll be having for breakfast today...
I know you're jealous!
You better believe I'll be making a pot of coffee when I get home!

28 week glucose test at 8:15am...
think low-sugar thoughts for me!

an incomplete education

So, I've been working on some projects...
but I'm not quite ready to share.
But I wanted to share something else that's been going on
and ask your opinion as well!!!

I have figured out that my high school and even parts of
my college education were lacking.
Now, maybe it's because I have a TERRIBLE memory,
but I know it's also because there were huge gaps in my education.
Particularly in the English department.
I have NEVER once learned how to diagram a sentence,
not that I really care now,
but isn't that funny.?! sad?!
We didn't read the CLASSICS in any of my English classes.
Okay, we read Shakespeare...but as far as I can remember
we really didn't read CLASSICS.

What is a classic, well, I'm not really sure.
But I just know I missed a lot of great books!
When people start talking books I tend to glaze over,
and hope the floor opens up and swallows me whole.
I can't contribute...most often it's "oh I never read that book".
So, I'm on a quest to change that.

I want to be more well rounded, more well read.
So, I enlisted the help of my friend, Lydia, the English teacher.
Her den library is amazing. 8 floor to ceiling book cases FULL!
Full of classics, modern stories, children's books, Biblical books,
anything you could really want to read!

So, she let me borrow a bunch of books and told me
to come get more when I was ready.
So, what did I pick out?
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
Animal Farm by George Orwell
1984 by George Orwell
You Come Too by Robert Frost
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
and
I'm in the process of reading
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
and
already read
A Separate Peace by John Knowles
I know that's a LOT of books but it's where I wanted to start.

A really great book she let me borrow is called,
An Incomplete Education by Judy Jones and William Wilson.
It's a huge book but has some great parts about great/famous authors
and what you should know about them,
what you should have learned about them in high school
and what you should have read of theirs in high school and college.

I've obviously got a lot of reading to do,
but I'm looking forward to being more
well rounded (not just my belly)
and well read!
Did you have to read any of those in high school?
What do you recommend?
What are you favorite classics?

thanks a thousand times over!!!

naomi funnies

Naomi really is a funny girl.
She says things that make me laugh on a regular basis.
I started a Naomi quote of the day thing on my facebook page.
Someday I may share them here...

Tonight since Greg is out of town our friends had us over for dinner
before our Christ Care meeting.
Then Larry and Shannon watched the kids while Wanda and I went to the meeting.
Larry and Shannon took the kids to the park and the pool!
The kids had a blast.
When Wanda and I got back from our meeting
the kids were watching the Little Mermaid.
Then we were getting ready to go and Wanda was trying
to turn on one of the lambs when the bulb burned out.

We get to the front door and Naomi says in her most sweet innocent voice,
"I'm sorry"
Wanda says, "for what, that the bulb burned out"
to which Naomi replies,
"No, I'm sorry that I have to go"

I couldn't stop laughing. What a girl.

On the way home she kept telling me that I was making her sad.
I asked why and she said because she loves Mrs. L so much.
I told her that I understand and that she didn't have to be sad.
She said, "but don't worry mom, I love you too"
She kept talking about loving people and I told her
that it's okay to love lots of people.
She said she loves everyone.
But then said, "but I don't have to love the people on the Food Network"
Ha, that girl and the Food Network.

Did I ever tell you that she "plays" Food Network?
She'll get out all her plastic food and PLAY food network,
it's so fun to watch!

Those are my funny Naomi stories for you today!
Stay tuned there are sure to be many more in the months to come.
Like when the baby gets closer to coming I'm sure.

Okay, one more quick story...about the baby and Naomi.
She wanted it to be a girl for a long time.
Now she wants another brother.
I think she just wants to be the only girl?!
Sometimes if I say outloud that I'm pregnant when answering a question or something,
she'll go "You're PREGNANT?" like she's never heard that before.
She also asks me on a daily basis if the baby is going to come out today!
So fun!!!
